Many people think the marathon to be the ultimate endurance race, but people have themselves been pushed further distances away from the middle of last century. It seems difficult to imagine today, but in the 1870s to 75,000 people will gather to encourage participants in six days of walking events in the United States, with the winners earning a national reputation and astronomical rules relating to remuneration time. It all started in 1867 when Edward Payson Portland came to Chicago in 25 days, captivating the nation. A rivalry quickly developed between Payson and Daniel O'Leary, recently immigrated Irish farmer, and this rivalry led to a series of 6 races a day that became a 'World Championship Long Distance. The format quickly changed to upright walking and running, with participants sleeping a few hours at night and continue. Hitchborn Fred established a record 565 miles for this event, and was a pioneer in the participation of Afro-American in sport. However, the increase of automobiles and the lack of promoters led to the popular series about the end of the 20th century.

But other ultramarathons were great at any time. In 1921, the first marathon of comrades who had held in South Africa, to commemorate the fallen soldiers during World War 1. The race of 90 kilometers in length became longer ultra-marathon in the world, attracting a field of 13,000 per year. In 1953 a London Marathon in Brighton was established along a popular route for cars and has continued for over 50 years. In the 1950s and 60s, UltraRunning Ted Corbitt was a prominent pioneer and is also Now known as "the father of modern UltraRunning.

However, it is only with the marathon craze in the 1970s that interest for UltraRunning off. In 1982 a group of RAF officers decided to test whether the original story behind the marathon is true – if was possible that the Greek messenger Pheidippides really run all the way to the Battle of Marathon to Sparta in 36 hours. They verified it was indeed possible and the following year Spartathlon born. Further tests were undertaken in extreme weather have tested the limits of resistance – for example, the Badwater race in Nevada, which are searched from lowest to highest point in the continental the United States over a distance of 135 miles. Launched in 1986, the Marathon des Sables is a series of seven days by the Moroccan Sahara, and is considered as one of the toughest events in the world.

The 6 one-day races have also yesterday a revival – in 1984, the Cliff Young Australian 6 days of race was based in Colac, Australia, and has witnessed many memorable performances in recent years. Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team was founded as a community service UltraRunning and became the leading organizer of events in the world UltraRunning, 6 and 10 events per day, plus the 3100 Mile race transcendence, the longest road race in the world.

Greek runner Yiannis Kouros has made his mark as the main ultrarunner both distance and number of races per day and has the vast majority of documents available in the world — including recently in the Colac 6 day race in 2005 and won an incredible total of 1036 kilometers.
