Ocean Wonders
Ocean Wonders

Seabirding pelagic trips are actually trips into the soil of the land unknown and unexpected, one wonders and wonderful things, which is precisely why are so addictive. You never know what you find "out there", even a few miles into the Pacific Ocean.
A sunny morning in June Peter Ginsburg, Commander USN (ret) and I were birding with Dave Povey in 21 meters of Parker fishing boat. Hardly had we five miles shore when he saw a large flock of feeding gulls, pelicans, cormorants and terns. We must find a motor with an amazing sight: acres of suction tentacles that protrude from holes 24 inches above the surface of the sea, coming and going, leaving more than 2 seconds, then dive, only to reappear a second later – an Alice in Wonderland surreal sight of hundreds of red-brown "tentacle bush" waving in the wind.
Neither David nor Pete had never attended an event in its 50 years overall at sea was probably Humboldt Squid – also known as the giant squid – which normally live at depths of 2,000 meters, but obviously had chased / followed by a bench fish bait to the surface – and the birds with a picnic. This is the kind of spirit of amazing scenes to be found only "where outside ".
The Pacific Ocean is a vast and virtually unexplored frontier, beyond comprehension huge, full of birds rarely seen and poorly understood. 100 miles west of stretching beneath the waves, Southern California contains the submarine ridges, domes and banks which create areas rich life, which attracts a diverse and rich variety of seabirds: albatrosses, shearwaters, petrels (including Pterodroma petrels), storm petrels auks and guillemots.
In most areas of life on the edge of the continental shelf is so rarely seen sea birds (birds like the Laysan albatross, Phaeton Red-billed, Murphy's Petrel, Cook's Petrel, Flesh-footed Shearwater) and mega-Rarities (Short-tailed Albatross, Hawaiian Petrel, Stejneger's Petrel, Spotted Petrel, Bulwer's Petrel, Streaked Shearwater, Red-tailed Tropicbird). The search for such rarities seldom seen, is the ultimate treasure hunt.
At sea, sun, wind, waves, the gentle rocking of the boat can put one in a trance, a feeling of being in agreement with the oceans, and life itself. The pelagic birders who enjoy savoring the flavor of the sea port of impending sense of discovery. This is their website spent.
Albatross, giant squid, shearwaters, Harbor seals, guillemots, Mola mola, fulmars, minke quick, Mew Gulls, striped dolphins Risso, leucistic Black-vented whales, shearwaters gray sea lions in California, California, flying fish, skipjack tuna, giant blue whale, albacore, thieves, Elephant seals, Brown Boobies, violation of humpback whales, Skua (pelagic predators of the sky), sei whales, auk, common dolphins, seagulls, Bottlenose Dolphin, Blue-footed boobies, albatrosses, Hourglass Dolphin, phalarope, swordfish, fin whales, pelicans, oystercatchers, cormorants, Guadalupe fur seals, arctic terns – the result of each trip an endless series of natural wonders never seen by those who rarely venture into their televisions.
For birders, the attraction is stronger – the rare birds that come never to the mainland. Within 150 miles of the coast are the only birds who had been seen by one of 100,000 people. The secret to finding these rare birds (eg Laysan Albatross, Red-billed Phaethon, Murphy's Petrel Cook's Petrel, Flesh-footed Shearwater) and mega-Rarities (Short-tailed albatross, petrels, Hawaii, Stejneger's Petrel, Spotted Petrel, Bulwer's Petrel, Shearwater striated, Red-tailed Tropicbird) is to be there for the duration living areas of deep water, with well-informed leaders who know where and when to consult, as a result of temperature and breaks current Chumming, watching, waiting ….
In 2007, Terry Hunefeld retired from his job as a CEO to follow his bliss of pelagic birding – observing seabirds at sea. He and his wife Ann own a Bed and Breakfast Inn near the sea in the San Diego area. For more info, click Cardiff Lodge or Encinitas B&B.
