Since February 2010, no person under 21 years can get a credit card, unless they can prove they are financially independent, or have a parent co-sign and accept responsibility for payment. A child may also be allowed to use credit cards their parents.
Your kids are ready for a credit card? A parent must be sure of the answer to this question before handing the plastic. By the time they reach adolescence, the child should have learned the value of a dollar, among other things, but also need to know how credit and the consequences of abuse. The before their children learn the basics of money management, the better. This knowledge will lead to a responsible use of credit.
Start with a compensation fund for young children. Your payment must be preached to perform certain tasks or responsibilities at home. Remember, you teach the value of a dollar, responsibility, and the idea of making money. If you teach your children that money does not come cheap, to learn to save money and budget. Then you will not have to allocate extra money whenever you want to go to the movies or the mall with friends. The lesson is if they are responsible with the money they have more to spend when necessary, and will not pass on a whim. Cash is easy to learn because you can literally see the money come and go. An empty wallet equals money.
Once your child begins to build savings, if the allowance or part-time work, time to open a bank account. This may include a debit / ATM in probably the first experience of their child with plastic. The previous lessons with cash always be applied. Teaching keep track of your money (balance), and trying not to make the card as an inexhaustible source of money. Remind them that is as profitable as it is directly from your bank account, and there are fees for spending more than you have in your account (overdraft).
Once you grasp the concept financial management responsibility, you can start talking about credit. Make sure they know what it means. Credit is borrowed money which must be paid, and no penalty if they have not made within an agreed timeframe. Misuse of credit can harm your chances of getting credit in the future.
Some parents want their child has a credit card. Others like having a target at the university, or only for emergencies. There is no good or bad for him. However, if your kids have credit cards or not, never a bad idea to educate on personal finance and credit. This avoids problems of debt consolidation and reduce the need for debt management.
