Recent media attention on chemicals in products for infants has caused great concern and alarm. The report No more toxic pool Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, an organization non-profit whose goal is to draw attention to products harmful chemicals in our products, skin care, we noted that many baby products that we know, love, and they have used for many years to contain cancer-causing (carcinogenic) chemicals in particular, 1,4-dioxane and formaldehyde. In addition to these harmful chemicals, the Parents have to worry about the presence of phthalates and parabens in products and personal care for your baby. These chemicals are not regulated by the federal government, here in the U.S., but have been banned in other countries. 1,4-dioxane has been banned in Europe and formaldehyde is prohibited Japan and Sweden. The United States and Europe have banned three phthalates (DEHP, DBP and BBP) in toys children.
1,4-dioxane is a product that is not intentionally added, but is considered a pollutant and therefore should not appear on product labels. The chemical blowing agent used is found in many products that we use today, such as shampoos, liquid soaps, deodorants, detergents, toothpaste and more. 1,4-dioxane is easily absorbed into the bloodstream that can damage the central nervous system, liver, kidneys and may even death.
Exposure to Formaldehyde occurs every day in the air we breathe and the food we eat. Formaldehyde gas is colorless and odorless gas that can cause throat nose, skin and eye irritation. Exposure can cause coughing, wheezing, watery eyes, itching and skin irritation. Exposure formaldehyde has been linked to allergies and asthma in children. The United States Environmental Protection Agency classified as a carcinogen on formaldehyde and high levels of this chemical have been associated with the development of the nose, lung and brain cancer and leukemia.
Phthalates are another chemical man found in many personal care products. Phthalates are used to make plastics flexible and used in many fragrance oils to help extend the smell of perfume. A study by the American Academy of Pediatrics has concluded that Many young children are frequently exposed to common phthalates in baby lotions, powders and shampoos, making them more vulnerable to the effects negative development and reproduction of these chemicals. Phthalates have been linked to hormonal changes, birth defects, abnormalities reproduction among male infants (eg, count low sperm counts, testicular cancer, malformations of the penis) and damage to liver, kidneys and lungs.
Parabens are used as a preservative in many cosmetics, food and pharmaceuticals. Parabens can mimic the hormone estrogen when absorbed through the skin, parabens have been linked to breast cancer and abnormalities male reproductive system.
